What it Means to Be Green: The Growing Sustainable Communities Conference in Dubuque

Vehicles

What do you think of when you hear the word sustainable? Nowadays we toss around the word "green" so frequently because the word itself has become hip, chic or très moderne, yet it's actually somewhat difficult to define what being "green" totally encompasses in its true and purest essence.

Sustainability is one of the core components of being "green" - direct definition (from www.merriam-webster.com):" a : of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged." It's using, and re-using, our resources to make environmentally sound methods for production of practically anything that will help us improve quality of life and earth. The best of the best in terms of sustainability in vehicles was realized by GM with the recent release of the Chevrolet Volt.

The Volt, being the most environmentally conservative electic vehicle on the market, is of big interest to people who strive for sustainability. Hence the Volt is seemingly a perfect fit for the Growing Sustainable Communities Conference that was held in Dubuque, IA which Runde Chevrolet (via their Business Central status) was proud and honored to be a part of. The conference showcased various inventions and methods that promote sustainability of local businesses. Cathy Brandt, Director of Sales & Business Development for Sustainable City Network, Inc. was gracious enough to give us some insight and history about the conference and it's goals.

Hello Cathy, can you tell us more about the Conference?
It's the Growing Sustainable Communities Conference . The city of Dubuque has done it for the past 3 years and this year Sustainable City Network and the City of Dubuque did it together. The ultimate goal was to have people have one place to meet and network with other municipal professionals, business leaders, community members, as well as vendors and they can learn something about sustainability and take it back to their community to use. Most people are familiar with the environmental benefits of sustainability, but what has been resounding with people recently is that it is also economically effective. If it's not economically sustainable then it's not going to work. This conference showed businesses different ways to conserve resources, money, man hours and to help a promote positive light within other businesses. These ideas were brought through by showing what other communities are doing and how people can adapt it to their own communities and businesses.

How many people attended and where were they from?
Over 300 people attended representing 11 States and 48 cities ranging from California to New York. Even 2 people from Australia!

How were the topics picked for the conference?
We looked at the 25 most read articles on our Sustainable City Website, which features expert opinions and information about sustainability throughout the nation, and used the topics of those articles as an outline for the presentations in the conference. Vehicles and transportation are always a big topic, especially now with electric vehicles. So with the help of Runde's sponsorship, we were able to add the Chevrolet Volt to the conference. Rich Gunther, Fleet Management for General Motors, did a presentation about the sustainable vehicles GM offers.

It's interesting that despite the fact that we are a national website, we learned a lot more about what we have in our own backyard. Such as Runde's being a Business Central Dealer and that Crescent Electric is a distributor of the charging stations for electric vehicles. There's really a lot of big things happening in this area with sustainability, that people probably aren't aware of, that spreads out much further than most people would think.

What was the reaction with the Chevy Volt?
There were people constantly looking at the Volt and asking questions. You guys allowed people to open the doors and sit inside of it which really took the experience to a whole new lev
el.

Can you tell me more about the website?
The founder of Sustainable City Network, Tom Woodward, has been in communications with the City of Dubuque and found that there is a lot of sustainable information out there but it takes a long time to filter through and research it properly. So what the website provides is a central location of well-organized, vetted information that is provided by either an experienced municipality or information from accredited industry experts and leaders so you know their information is accurate.

Brian Pinch, from our Chevrolet Store in East Dubuque, Illinois has been officially trained on the Volt and offered valuable information to the attendees and showed people around the Volt. He loved the experience and had some great things to say about it. How was the conference, Brian?

The conference was great, it encompassed so many things, from the food we eat to how we do our business. It's such a great event because it's more than just green society, it's keeping it green and building infrastructure so that it operates that way naturally. The Chevy Volt is a product of that idea. A lot of people had some misconceptions of the Volt and that's why we were there -- to inform people about how it works and show its sustainability.

How many people came up and talked to you about the Volt?
I talked to around 75 people or more. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in it. It was pretty exciting to see the enthusiasm.

What was the most common question people asked?
Most of the questions were asked out of curiosity and regardless of the question, we were able to provide them answers and let them experience the vehicle first hand. Many people were confused about the Range Extension. Several thought that the vehicle runs on gas as soon as the charged electricity runs out, but it actually uses the fuel to run a generator that will charge the battery to extend the charge of the Volt. When it's in this mode it runs at a lower RPM so you aren't leaving as big of a carbon blueprint. The Volts carbon footprint is the smallest of any vehicle we've seen to date.

What do you think was the most surprising thing people thought about the Volt?
Just how "car-like" it is and how impressive the appearance and comfort the vehicle offered. They were blown away by how far they could drive the vehicle on such a small amount of money. When they learned that it was a 94mpg car, I got a lot of "Wow’s".

What's your favorite feature of the Volt?
Everything, I wish I could own one. It's an impressive feat of engineering.

What did you learn at the conference?
A lot about waste management through the landfill system and the scientific parts of the harmful and gaseous substances we breathe in every day. It made me wish I could be involved in that type of research myself. The conversion they can do from the waste we put into the ground regarding turning it around into something positive is very inspiring. Ford To Recieve Breakthrough Award for Rear Inflatable Seat Belts

We recently talked about Ford's creation of the rear passenger inflatable seat belts (in-case you missed it click here). Ford was recognized for their efforts in keeping us safer by earning the highly reputable Popular Mechanics Magazine award for "Breakthrough Product". "Ford's goal is to develop innovative safety technologies that give our customers more peace of mind, so it is a great honor to receive the Breakthrough Technology Award," says Srini Sundararajan, safety technical leader for Ford Research and Innovation. "I thank Popular Mechanics for recognizing the contributions of a number of dedicated engineers from Ford." In addition to this great news, Ford has also released a nice visual explanation of their seat-belt: (Image from media.ford.com)

Amanda Zumhof - The Germoentech

Amanda Zumhof came in to work at Runde's with a big smile on her face and a bright welcoming attitude. 4 weeks later and she's smiling even bigger and her bright attitude shines stronger! We took the new recruit to the side to get a little intel about who she is and what she likes to do. If I had to describe Amanda in one (extremely made-up but sounds almost real) word it would be "Germoentech" GERmanMOtherENgagedTECHnician.

How long have you been at the job?
About four weeks, started my first week at the Chevy store to learn the computer system then came here.

Zumhof… What nationality is that?
German. I was born and raised in Dubuque, though.

Any kids?
Just one, Mason, he’s 14 months old.

Married?
I'm engaged to Chad Gansen. We plan on getting married in June 2012.

Congratulations! Any big plans for the wedding? *sighs*
I don’t want to plan it. I’ve done so much but it’s far from being all planned.

Going to be a big wedding?
Probably, we have four sets of parents. Divorced on both sides and then re-married. I’m guessing around 400 people will be at the wedding.

That’s a lot of people to feed…
*laughs* Yeah, It’s going to be fun.

Is your fiancé from Dubuque as well?
Yep, he works at Gansen Pumping. We met randomly one night when I was hanging out with some friends, then we started hanging out more and now we’ve been together for about three and a half years.

Any plans for the honeymoon?
We are still in contemplation of where we want to go. We just know we want to go in the Winter to get away from the bad weather here. Last night I was on Facebook and my friend had some pictures of her honeymoon in Jamaica and thought that looked pretty good.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I just stay at home usually… I go out every now and again. My kid has me running around right when I get back from work. He woke up at 11:30 last night and decided it was time to play.

How do you like being a mom?
I love it, it’s fun. It’s a non-stop gig, but I like it.

What kind of restaurants do you like from around the area?
I just tried that Texas Roadhouse, I actually had it in Davenport as well, and it’s really good and fun. They do line dancing and all that stuff. Mason was bobbing his head while he was eating to the music, it was cool. Their buns with the cinnamon butter are awesome.

You just had a birthday I hear, what did you end up doing to celebrate?
Not much, actually. Chad had to be out-of-town so I sat at home with my kid and watched Jersey Shore... I’m pretty sure I dropped like 10 IQ Points just watching that for a half hour. Mason was out by 11:00pm, it was pretty stress free.

What kind of hobbies are you into?
Crafts and scrapbooking and stuff like that. I don’t have much time to do that stuff anymore though.

If you were to win the lottery, what would you do with the money?
Oh I don’t know… I don’t spend a lot of money usually. I’d probably find something nice for the kids. I probably wouldn’t get a huge house or anything like that though.

Have you ever seen those pajama pants on T.V.? What do you think of them?
Yeah… they look like they’d be comfortable. But I doubt I’d ever get them.

What’s your favorite T.V. Show?
Sons of Anarchy. Love it. Jax is my favorite character, although I’m kind of depressed that he got his haircut.

Not so hot anymore?
He’s still cute; I just like his hair longer. I don’t usually like longer hair on people, but long hair just fitted him better.

What’s your favorite movie?
I thought Hall Pass was pretty funny that I saw recently. But like pretty much any Adam Sandler movies.

Classic goofy Sandler ala Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison or the more serious Sandler like Click! or Punch Drunk Love?
No, those serious ones are kind of stupid, I like his comedy’s more. I like comedy’s like that… I want to see Brides Maids and thought the Hangover was awesome!

What kind of food do you like?
Anything. Mexican, Chinese, whatever. I really like Hu-Hot.

Are you into any sports?
I used to play soccer, but I don’t play much anymore.

You have a bit of history with service work, right?
Yeah, I was at 4 other service places before I went to North Scott in Davenport to start my schooling, then I moved back to Dubuque and continued the schooling at NICC.

Do you plan on being a technician?
I’ve done the work and I like it but I like what I’m doing now as a service writer. Part of the reason I stepped away from technician work is to have a family and make sure that I have time for my kids.

What made you want to get into mechanical work?
I don’t know… when I was 16 my dad got me a Lumina. The back tire locked up and had a nail in it. My dad took it to his friend who tried to fix it and it ended up costing $200 something so I decided to learn how to do it myself. So at 16 I was ripping apart cars and putting in brake pads in the driveway. My dad never let me cut the grass or anything because it wasn’t “the girl thing to do” but I was able to fix the lawnmower... so to this day I still don’t know how to cut the grass. Maybe it’s a bit of a rebellious thing to show that I can do this mechanical stuff that is considered a “mans thing”.

And now you’re working with our Suzuki/PreDriven service manager Lori as a Service Writer… how do you like it so far?
I love it. Lori and I get along great; we might even get into trouble together.

What made you come to Runde’s?
I talked to Lori through my other jobs because she would order parts through those companies. From that I got to know her better and found out they had an opening. The rest is history.

Thanks for doing this interview Amanda! We all welcome you to the Runde's family and hope you continue to enjoy your work here!

Chevrolet Diamonds and Dreams Helps Youth Baseball Close to Home

Traditions come in all sorts - you have your own personal traditions, your family has traditions, your religion etc. but there is little denying that one of America's greatest shared traditions is Baseball.

Chevrolet and some partners wants to make this tradition as enjoyable as possible by providing better playing conditions and education to our youth through the Diamonds and Dreams Program. The program awarded 100 youth baseball communities across the country prizes - 20 Field Makeovers, 20 Instructional Clinics and 60 Equipment Packages.

Phil Caruso, Chevrolet Marketing Manager explains; "Chevrolet's 'Building Diamonds and Dreams' program is another facet of our commitment to youth baseball programs across America. Every young ball player wants and deserves a 'dream' baseball diamond and Chevrolet along with our partners, are proud to have brought one to the winning communities."

Communities registered for the 'Diamonds and Dreams' promotion from March 31st - May 31st and 100 winners were drawn from the entries. Each of the 100 winners are also entered for a chance to win one of four trips to the 2011 MLB ALL-Star Game in Phoenix, AZ!

Debbie Stratton - Likes WWE & LOVES Her New Escape!

Debbie Stratton is a hard worker, a kind spirit and a wonderful customer of ours. She was in to pick up her Ford Escape and had a few minutes to spare to do a quick interview. If you see her at the Grand Harbor on the weekends be sure to say "hi"!

What brought you into Runde's Today?
An SUV. I've been really wanting an SUV.

And what did you end up getting?
A Ford Escape. I'm looking forward to it for the winter and whatnot. And everyone has one now, I thought it was about time to get with it.

How did you find Runde's?
I actually bought a car from Al before, so I knew where to go when I wanted to get my SUV. He was on the lot one Saturday morning and I was looking around and he was very kind and helped me find the perfect car.

How did you enjoy your experience here?
It was fantastic. I'd totally recommend it to everybody. I even come back and visit when I'm not even shopping for a car just to see how Al and everyone is doing. Service here is fantastic as well.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your experience?
A 10, definitely. I'd recommend it ... really ... you are treated like a king when you walk in and you feel that you are in control and have time to think about everything instead of being rushed and pushed into something you may not want.

Are you from the area?
I'm from Dubuque. Lived there all my life.

Any Family or Pets?
It's just me and my poodle, Buttercup. I've had her since she was a puppy, she just turned 2 years old. We go for rides around Dubuque or Maquoketa. I take her pretty much everywhere.

What else do you like to do around the area?
I like Zoro’s Gyros on Central Ave. If you go away hungry, that's your own fault, because they give you more than enough. And they are very friendly.

Watch any movies?
Nope, I work to much.

Any good shows?
Oh, I'm a huge WWE Fan. I've been to a show in Chicago. It was awesome!

Where do you work at?
I work at an embroidery business out in Peosta. I love it there. I embroider things like names and numbers to the back of shirts. It's kind of neat walking around seeing your work on the back of someone's shirt. I also work at the Grand Harbor Center on the weekends near the water park. I'm an arts-crafts teacher. If your kids don't want to spend all their time in the water-park then they can come to my class and make bird-feeders out of pine cones, peanut butter and bird food. We also play games and do various activities.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I'd like to go back to Branson, MO to see the musical shows and stuff. I've seen Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams, Wayne Newton, The Osmonds. It's just a great time there.

Any hobbies?
I do a lot of cross-stitching.

Looking forward to the winter at all?
No, not really... I like the fall. I like to watch the leaves fall and go to the apple orchids. I make my own apple pie and easy fudge.

Sounds good, maybe you can come by and let us sample some!
Oh, I'd be delighted to! I make deserts for the Rockdale Church's Cookie and Candy Walk in the first weekend in December. You can buy cookies and candy by the pound there, it's amazing.

If you were to win the lottery what would you do with the money?
I'd probably just sit back and relax for a week. After that it'd get old, so I'd probably get back into the regular routine.

You wouldn't buy a bigger house or anything?
Oh no, I love my home. I might add a garage if I won the lottery, maybe buy another vehicle. But nothing too major.

Excited for Halloween?
Oh yes, I have to work during it though so I can't do much for it. I'm more into Christmas anyway.

Anything you'd like to add?
For the great experience I've had out here I'd really, really recommend Runde's. Easy going, no pressure, just perfect. I had a brother that bought from Runde's and he loves his Explorer.

Thanks Debbie!
