Put OnStar on your Shopping List

Vehicles , Technology

OnStar has been around since the beginning of this young century and it has definitely been a blessing to many and saved many lives. However up until now, people without OnStar had to upgrade their entire vehicle to be able to get the service and unfortunately not everyone can spend thousands of dollars to upgrade their vehicles.

Well I was couch cruising on Sunday night and happened upon an episode of Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice and in this episode I learned that OnStar was getting ready to release a version of their product that could be installed on any vehicle and hence OnStar would be made available to everyone. The product comes in a box that includes a rear view mirrow with the familiar OnStar buttons and all the necessary hardware to hook it up to any vehicle. The "OnStar in a box" version of the product is actually called FMV (For My Vehicle) and it will be sold nationally by Best Buy.

Granted the product will still run you a few C-notes, but for those of you out there who have kids in high-school or college, I know that getting them the safest vehicle possible is probably a major concern of yours.

I'm also sure there are many customers out there who can't afford to be shelling out thousands for a newer vehicle for their kid right now (the price of school is outrageous enough), and OnStar FMV is definitely worth checking out. Purchasing and installing this new OnStar version in a loved one's vehicle may be well worth the price. OnStar FMV is scheduled to be available on Best Buy shelves in a few months.

In the Celebrity Apprentice episode, John Rich says that he plans to purchase OnStar FMV for his grandma. The video below wasn't shown on the epidose that I saw, but I found it on YouTube today and it shows him delivering this new gadget to his granny who drives an older Cadillac.

Birth of America's Bird - The Decorah Bald Eagle Cam

Technology , Community

You've "seen" them everywhere (even flying in the skies above Runde Chevrolet in East Dubuque on some occasions); The Seal of the President of the United States, on the back of coins and about 20 of them are flashed on the Steven Colbert Shows introduction video on Comedy Central. The American Bald Eagle is the most advertised and recognized bird in America, and for good reason. Very-frequently you can see them in the media, semi-frequently you will see them in the air, rarely will you see one close and very-rarely would you ever have the chance to see one lay eggs and care for them... until now.

The Decorah Eagle Cam was set up by the Raptor Resource Project to give viewers a chance to bear witness to the birth and care of America's Bird in real-time. While watching the live feed bear in mind that the nest is 5-6 feet across and weighs approximately 1.5 tons in a tree about 80 feet in the air. It's hard to consider it when you watch the video but that is a HUGE nest! As of March 4th the mother eagle has laid three eggs. They are expected to hatch in early April. This is a great opportunity to see the Bald Eagles, live, for a long period of time and it's all happening in the Decorah Iowa! Just another great thing the Tri-States have given us access to.

Ford Gets "Touched" With Upgrades.

Vehicles , Technology , Ford

Ford is, no doubt, the leader when it comes to implementing technological features in its vehicles. With Ford Sync ever-expanding and the release of MyFord Touch, techheads and gearheads can finally walk hand-in-hand. With its voice recognition technology, you never have to take your eyes or hands off the steering wheel or your eyes off the road. This also means that you will talking to your vehicle... a lot (just be sure to laugh it off it someone stares at you in confusion). The next batch of upgrades include: increased command recognition, alias implementation (can recognize more words for the same command such as "temp up", "hotter", "heat up") and voice navigation will map your command to a GPS via MyFord Touch.

Build Your Own Corvette Engine

Customers , Vehicles , Technology , Chevy

Am I the only one who thinks "holy cow, there must be a whole lot of complicated things going on when they built that engine!" This is what I think almost every time I pop open my hood to look at the engine? How would one go about building an engine? What all goes into the design? Is displacement really king when it comes to sheer power? Was GM's 3800 V-6 really the best car engine of the 20th century? Or what about Jeep's 4.0L inline 6-cylinder? I later go on to wonder if I were to ever take one apart, what would I see, would I know how it all worked, and could I put it all back together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle? If only I could see one being built from scratch and have an explanation of what's going on... what's that? I can!??

That's right, Chevrolet is now giving you the option to build your own engine with the purchase of a Z06 or ZR1 Corvette. Pack up your bags, plop down an extra $5,800 plus travel charges to Detroit and you will be face to machine with all the parts and tools needed to build the very same engine that will be rocketing you down the road at ridiculous speeds. The best part about it is if you are in the market for a Z06 or a ZR1 then the extra $$$ needed for this awesome, once in a lifetime opportunity, will probably be next to nothing.

Check out the video below for a demonstration of the engine you could be building!

OnStar Just Got Sweeter

Vehicles , Technology , Chevy

Who knew how big Google would become. Who knows how big they will be. All I know is that Google does, almost everything, right. Expanding the already enormous range of features Google and OnStar already offers, now comes Google Maps. Later this month all GM vehicles (from 2006, up) that are equipped with Turn-by-Turn Navigation will be able to use the Google Map feature. This feature will be available through OnStar eNav Technology and will offer users to effortlessly receive directions and turn by turn visual signals to get to their destinations without any hassle.

The best part of all of this besides the point that you don't have to go to Google, print out the directions to where you want to go, then hassle with the papers while driving and swerving in and out of traffic? It's FREE. Google will be adding this feature at no additional cost to your OnStar subscription. Pretty sweet! Here's a video about OnStar's similar feature integration with MapQuest.
