Sean Dailey is one of Runde’s newest employees. He has been very busy meeting all of the friendly faces in our Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep store and serving the great people of, and around, Manchester their vehicle needs. In the midst of his busy schedule we were able to sneak in a few questions to get to know him better.

So Sean, what exactly do you do here at Runde’s?
I am a general sales associate, I sell cars

How long have you been doing that?
Two and a half weeks so far.

Are you originally from the Manchester area?
No, I was actually born in San Francisco. I joined the military and after moving around for a while, I settled here in Iowa about 19 years ago.

Why Iowa?
I moved around a lot as a military kid, and spent some time in Iowa. In fact, my mom married a man from Iowa before we moved back out to Washington. I just like the area and how all of the people have good work ethic and are always friendly.

Which branch of the military did you serve in?
I was in the Army for six years.

So what do you do with your free time?
I really enjoy playing billiards, messing around with my dog, and spending time with my wife.

Could you consider yourself to be a billiards professional?
Almost, but I am not quite good enough yet.

You said you have a wife, how long have the two of you been together?
I have been married to my wonderful wife, Judy, for about 14 years.

Do you have any children?
Judy has three children; Scott, Kim, and Michelle.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have a Chihuahua, her name is Liberty.

When you and your family sit down for dinner is it “table time” or head-to-the-living-room-time and all is well so long as nobody spills on the couch or carpet?
We all gather around the table for dinner.

Do you have a favorite place to go and relax in the West Delaware area?
Strokers Saloon.

Is that your favorite place to eat too?
No, I really like to go down to Diny’s steakhouse.

I’m not familiar with the place, what’s good to eat there?
Their ham steak is to die for. I get it every time I go there.

If you could own your dream vehicle, what would it be?
That truck right there (gesturing to the blue Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie sitting right in front of him.) I sit here all day, every day, looking at it. The more I see it, the more I love it.

Country Club or a nice relaxing afternoon in the park?
I don’t golf, so I am going to say the park

Definitely not pushing, rider.

Casey’s.

Apartment, ranch style house, farm, or van down by the river?
I am going to have to go with the ranch. I sold my place on the river a few years back.

Def Leppard or Bon Jovi?
Now that’s a good question, I was kind of a hair band fan when I was younger… Def Leppard

Who is your favorite singer?
Ozzy Osbourne.

If we headed out to the lot and checked the CD player of your vehicle, what would we pull out?
Poison’s Greatest Hits.

Speaking of vehicles, what do you drive?
I have a 2000 pewter Silverado 1500, and I love it. Great reliable truck. My wife and I share cars, but she usually drives our 2004 LeSabre Unlimited. I really, really like that car.

Do you have any really memorable experiences in a car?
Well back in 1987 I was going a little too fast on a back road and ended up wrapping my car around a tree.

Scary. Was everyone ok?
Yeah, my buddy and I had a few bumps and scratches, but we were fine.

What is your favorite movie of the year?
(pausing for literally 5 minutes due to deep thought, and several phone calls) That one football movie was pretty good, The Blindside.

Did you make it to see Avatar?
Yeah… The graphics and special effects were phenomenal, but the storyline could have used some work.

What is your favorite movie of all time?
Men In Black.

Did you like the sequel?

Heck no.

So when you finally win the lottery, where will you go first?
Ireland… Specifically Dublin.

Going over to kiss the Blarney Stone?
No, my whole family is from over there, I think it would be cool to see where they came from.

What is your favorite part about working for Runde’s?
I’m learning tons of new things and really enjoy interacting and working with the great people here.

Final question, what is your best experience here at Runde’s in the short time that you have worked here?
I sold my first vehicle to a couple shortly after I arrived. They were super satisfied and it was great to see them leave here with a new car and a big smile on their faces.

Jeff Schmitt has been with us here at Runde's for several years. Having to deal with appointments and service, Jeff is always a busy guy. Today, however, we got to sneak in a couple of minutes to let everyone get to know Jeff a little better.

Thanks for chatting with me Jeff. To start out, what would you say is your position here?
Assistant Body Shop Manager would be my "main position" but I do several other things such as service writing, making appointments, etc.

How long have you been here?
Since August 2007, so a couple of years.

How do you like it at Runde's?
It's great. Everyone is really friendly.

Where are you from?
I was born in Dubuque, lived there for about a year. Then we moved to East Dubuque when my dad got a job at Fentress Lake Marina. So I've been living there pretty much all of my life.

I assume you went to the East Dubuque High school then?
Yep. I went to all of the East Dubuque Schools, I've seen Runde's grow throughout the years.

Do you have any pets?
Yea we have birds. One is a Quaker and one is a Sun Coiner.

I used to have birds as well... EVERY morning they'd wake you up bright and early around 5:30 or so.
Hahaha, yep. Exactly.

Favorite restaurant?
Olive Garden - I'd have to say their Alfredo dishes are my favorite.

What's the last movie you seen in theaters?
I saw Hot Tub Time Machine. It was a lot better than what everyone thought it would be. Pretty funny.

Are you planning on seeing Iron Man 2?
More than likely. I've seen the first one so I'd assume I'd watch the second one as well.

Do you do the whole Facebook thing? What do you think about those Social Networks?
Yea I do have a Facebook. I like the Social Networks - you can meet new people and chat with different people that share similar interests with you.

If you could take any one vehicle from our lot, what would you take?
I really like the new Camaro's. I'd LOVE to take the Corvette ZR1, but I don't think that would happen anytime soon.

Have any favorite sports teams?
If I'd have to pick I'd pick the Bears.

Do you have a role model?
I haven't really given that any thought before... if anything I'd have to say my high school principal, Greg Herbst, he was pretty inspirational. His talks and speeches really made sense.

Where would you go to have a good time around the area?
I like to go down to the river-walk and take walks there on nice days.

If Hollywood made a movie about you, what would the title of the movie be called?
The Stressful Life of Jeff Schmitt.

What' the biggest purchase you've ever made?
I just bought a car here, actually - an '06 Chevy Impala.

How has that been treating you?
It's been going great. I traded in a '96 Ford Mustang for the Impala which my girlfriend gives me a hard time about. She liked the Mustang but it was really bad with gas so I had to get something with better gas-mileage.

What do you do in your spare time?
I listen to music mostly, I used to be in choir. I also like to play video games , my dad and I play some multi-player games sometimes.

No longer in choir?
Well I think about doing it more often. I was actually the first one in East Dubuque to make All-State for singing in my senior year.

Who's your favorite vocal artist and genre?
It's a toss up between Michael Buble and Josh Groban. I mostly like classical.

What is the most important invention or innovation that happened during your lifetime?"
I think the Catscan was invented sometime during my lifetime.

How would you spend your ideal day?
I would wake up in the morning, get ready for the day and grab a nice healthy breakfast. I would do a little exercising and hang out with my girlfriend the rest of the day.

What is your favorite cartoon?
I like Family Guy.

What do you hope to accomplish in your near future?
 Just to live a happy and healthy life and keep my blood-pressure down. I joined The Gym in Dubuque to help out with the fitness in my life.

You ever scuba dive?
No...

Have you ever danced in the rain?
Uh... No...?

What's your highest score on guitar hero?
I think my girlfriend beats me at that one. I think eventually she won't even have to look at the T.V. and get a perfect score.

Who doesn't like puppies? I imagine that even Mr. E. Scrooge couldn't hold back the makings of a smile at the sight of a super cute quadra-ped furball. The joy and happiness that a new puppy brings us can only be matched by maybe the Surprised Kitty:

Here at Runde's today puppy love was in the air as Ashley Rigdon (daughter of Runde's own Lisa Rigdon) brought in her new loveable companion: Oliver. Oliver is a Yorkie Poo (mix between a Yorke and Poodle) and just turned 6 weeks today. I sort of wondered why they don't just call it a Yoodle -- considering a Schnauzer and Poodle mix is a Schnoodle. To me, "yorkie poo" sounds like what Ashley will probably be cleaning up in the Rigdon front yard next week. 

Anyway, it turns out that Oliver is the biggest of the bunch(the stud of the litter) as well as the only male amongst his 3 biological sibling puppies. Ashley, and two of her friends, got lucky enough to have a teacher whose pet dog just had this litter of puppies. She offered the puppies to any willing takers.

But acquiring Oliver was no easy task for Ashley. After the "Mom Let's Get YOU a Puppy for Mother's Day" card failed, it was up to Lisa to determine what Ashley had to do to prove her level of responsibility and thus earn the right to get a puppy. To make things legit, Lisa, drew up a contract which listed the responsibilities that would be expected of Ashley.

After signing this binding agreement, it was official - Ashley had a ball of cuteness that she could call her own. This being the first time that I've seen a Yorkie Poo, I must say they are tiny, cute little things. Oliver was getting excited and started exploring around the room and gave a Runde's Monkey a nice puppy kiss. CUTE! But, for the record, I still like the term: Yoodle.[/caption]

If you need more examples there are several other videos you can look up. The point is simple: pregnant women get into accidents too. It's something that we don't really want to hear about, but it happens. In 2008, over 27,000 pregnant women were killed in automobile accidents. In fact, statistics show that automobile accidents are the largest cause of pregnant fatalities. What is more terrifying than thinking of your unborn baby going through an accident?

As far as safety goes, the major focus has always been on infant safety and child seats while the specific safety needs of expecting mothers was perhaps overlooked a bit. That is starting to change, however, as the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM), a group of 11 car companies including GM, Ford and Chrysler, has recently taken interest in progressing the safety of pregnant women in their vehicles.

The current focus in the progression of making vehicles safer for pregnant women are computer models, and monitoring the effects of a crash on "pregnant" crash dummies. More intricate systems will take time to implement, but you can plan on seeing specific safety belt instructions for pregnant women in the near future.

In the meantime keep safety in mind as you pick out your family's new vehicle. There are certain vehicles that were created with the family in mind, like the Chevy Traverse. The Traverse provides a comfortable ride, and was rated the "Family Vehicle of the Year" by many different organizations including Kelly Blue book and SEAMO, based on its safety, capacity, ergonomics, and accessibility.

New Year's Resolution for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers? Keep mom and her soon to be baby boy or girl safe.

It's something we all fear on the road: getting into an accident. We look for signs of potentially dangerous situations and try to dodge them and avoid injury to ourselves and the people around us. During winter it's on our minds a bit more: "what if I slide and hit something" or "uh-o, I don't think my car is going to make it up this hill... what if I start slipping backwards..." As much as you try to be a cautious driver, sometimes it's impossible to avoid an accident.

Regardless of whether: your car skidded on ice, or you were text messaging and didn't see that truck in-front of you, or you got hit by someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word "stop" that appears on the red octagon-shaped thingee ... you should always be prepared for the aftermath of an accident. Would you know what to do if you get into an accident on your way home today? If not, follow Runde's accident survival guide and you'll be a little better off when that accident occurs. Print it off and keep it in your glove box if you want to reference it when you get into an accident.

And remember: Being prepared means being ready both mentally and physically.

What Happened??

The first thing to do after the accident occurs is to assess the situation. How bad of an accident is it? Is your car teetering on a median or is it in a safe location? If the vehicle isn't in such a trouble spot, you should move it (if possible) to a location where no further damage can be done. No matter how big or small the accident is, do not drive away. The law mandates that you stay at the accident scene until authorities are properly contacted. If you try to flee the scene you could end up with a very sizeable traffic ticket or a warrant for your arrest.

Who's Hurt Where and Why?

The next step is to check all parties in your vehicle for injuries. Make sure your kids and any other passengers are alright. Identify any injuries. Seriously injured individuals should not be moved unless they are in imminent danger from fire, traffic, raccoon attack etc. Dave, my brother-in-law, witnessed a girl getting his by a truck a couple weeks ago. The truck fled the scene, and Dave stayed with the girl. It was raining so Dave picked the girl up and carried her to the back of his van so she wouldn't get soaked. He said it seemed like the "gentleman" thing to do at the time. However, when the paramedics got there, Dave said they made it clear to him that it was the wrong thing to do. He should have just covered her up with a blanket or his coat and kept her stationary so he wouldn't have risked further injury.

For the most part: If you can get off the road ... GET OFF THE ROAD! Obviously that's not always feasible. A couple of years ago, there was an accident on Hwy 35 just out in front our Runde PreDriven store in Hazel Green, WI. A lady who was diving one of the cars got out of her vehicle and was standing out in the middle of the road in a state of semi-consciousness. During the accident, she had struck her head and she wasn't exactly sure where she was. Al Kloft, one of the salesmen at the PreDriven store, saw the accident occur and went out to guide the lady to safety. The lady's injuries turned out to be very minor, but her vehicle was totalled out so the following week she came back to Runde's and bought a replacement vehicle from Al.

Generally they say that follwing an accident, everyone who is capable of moving should get to a safe location and out of the way of passing traffic. If you are severely injured, call 911 for medical assistance or yell for help if a phone isn't available.

Time for the "Men" in Blue

Once you know what's going on, contact the police. They will tell you if their presence is needed at the scene depending on the severity of the incident. Mostly they are needed if the accident involves a hit and run*, if it is apparent that liability will be disputed or if there are injuries.

• *Note* If the accident was a hit and run, be sure to get as much information of the vehicle and driver that hit you as possible. Police will want, at the very least, the license plate number of the vehicle that hit you. If you can get a good look at the individual driving the vehicle and describe him/her to the police it will make it easier for them to catch and identify the perpetrator. In the situation I described above, Dave wasn't able to get the license number or description of the truck that hit the girl. He had the choice where he could have either chased after the truck in his van, or he could have stopped to help the girl lying in the middle of the crosswalk. I'd say that Dave made the right choice.

Take Away Emotion

When the police arrive, they will investigate the scene and talk to the individuals involved. When talking to the police, never admit fault. Tell them exactly what happened without saying "it was my fault." It's natural to want to say "sorry" to the other people involved in the accident but saying things like that could be construed as admission that you were at fault. And if you are truely not at fault, this admission could be used against you if the case ever got to court.

The Next Step is like a Warped Spin on Speed Dating

Give and receive names, addresses, and phone numbers with everyone involved in the accident. Get the year, make, model, license plate number, insurance carrier, and insurance policy number of all vehicles involved. If there were any witnesses get their contact information as well.

Set the Record Straight

Get ahold of your insurance company. If there is any vehicular damage or injuries from the accident report the details ASAP to your insurance company, remember never say you were the guilty party, just the facts ma'am.

Become a Photographer

 Take pictures. If you have a camera available snap shots of the damage of the vehicles, the accident scene, any injuries incurred and the people involved. If you don't just happen to have a "Sony 12 mega-pixel Cybershot DSLR Photo Machine Gun" camera on you, remember that most cellphones come with a built-in camera, if you don't have one ask someone else if they have a phone with a camera. This will serve you well for insurance or court purposes.

Take up Scrapbooking

Remember to document everything that happened as you may be able to get reimbursed for them. If you had to tow your vehicle get the name, location and phone number of the towing company and get a copy of any fees that may incur. Your insurance company may require you to select a pre-approved body shop to repair your vehicle, so record all fees charged.

Preparation is the Recipe for Survival

It's easy for us to say be prepared for an accident, but it's not something that most people think about on a regular basis. However, there are steps you can take so that you'll be ready for almost anything that lifes throws at you as you travel down that ramblin' road. Make sure that your hazzard (flashers, 4-ways, etc.) lights are in working order. Try to check them about once every 6 months -- it only takes 20 seconds to walk around your car. If you don't have a car-charger for your cell phone, then make sure that your phone is fully charged before you set out. If your planning a longer trip in the winter or late at night, make sure that your car is stocked with a few blankets, a working flashlight, and road flares. And if you're travelling alone, try to make sure that someone (a relative or a friend) is aware that your in transit.

I think it's pretty much a universal given that friends and relatives (moms especially) like to call us to make sure that our destination was safely reached. Remember to take care of yourself and your family. No matter what happens in an accident, life goes on, the best thing you can do is try to learn how to avoid future accidents from happening and teach what you learn to ones you love.
